EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in condemning the move.
The restrictions were imposed this week on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
