The New Mayor Vows a 'Dawn' for New York City in Inaugural Speech
In a inauguration day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “transform” America's largest city, promising “a new era” and an ambitious commencement to his administration.
A Historic Figure
The 34-year-old figure, who was a virtually unknown state assemblyman, has become the city's first Muslim mayor. He also made history by being the inaugural to be sworn in using the Islamic holy text.
“A time such as this comes rarely and rarer still is it that the citizens whose hands are upon the controls for transformation,” Mamdani stated.

The ceremony was a two-part event, beginning with a late-night oath-taking in a former subway station. He was formally sworn in on the steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's rise as a victory over powerful interests.
An Ambitious Blueprint
Mamdani now undertakes one of the most demanding jobs in American politics, with a plan promising:
- Subsidized daycare
- Fare-free public buses
- A halt to rent increases for nearly 1 million households
- A experiment of municipally-operated grocery stores
The estimated $10 billion expense of these programs may be challenging to fund. Mamdani has vowed to tax more heavily the wealthiest New Yorkers and corporations. However, as a city under the authority of the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Mamdani has sought to address these tensions by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, preventing the optics of losing a top Jewish official.
On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “socialist” and threatened withholding government money. Despite this, a prior encounter between the two was reportedly unexpectedly cordial.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his administration's public safety record, citing historically low numbers of murders and shootings in 2025, with murders reported.
As his work starts, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Queens apartment to the stately Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a unusual piece of advice about a supposed friendly ghost in the home, which reportedly only troubles those who fail to “do right by the city.”
Mamdani ended his speech with a simple statement: “The work has only just begun.”
